On Saturday, November 12, 2022, the Mythsinger Legacy Project celebrates the publication of the 3rd edition of Daniel Deardorff’s classic text, The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche, with an online community story circle around the fire of virtual history. The event will take place on Zoom on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. PST. Tickets are available on Eventbrite. [link will be added] Advance registration is encouraged, all ages are welcome. Suggested donation of $20 to $35, sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds. Visual descriptions will be provided.
The event, The Gift of Story, will explore the power of story and myth-making and feature short readings to celebrate the public Daniel Deardorff’s hosted by Mythsinger Legacy Project steward and Daniel’s life partner, Judith -Kate Friedman, and Quanita Roberson, author of The Inner Ground Railroad and longtime colleague of Judith-Kate and Daniel, through retelling of ancient tales, sharing audio archives of the story, and Deardorff’s teaching and conversation with attendees, we will explore the importance of myth, honor our dance with the diversities in our lives, and seek ways to heal otherness and “otherness” in ourselves and in society. Together we will experience the richness of community that arises when old stories are told.
During the online session, attendees will witness Daniel’s Call of Fire on video, music from The Mythsinger, and excerpts from his book, including short myths and commentary. Following the dialogue and presentations from the hosts, participants will be invited to share their responses in the tradition of “feeding the story”. As Deardorff taught, the story “nourished” us, and we now nurture the story and the storytellers in reciprocity for the nourishment received. This event is made possible through the generous support of the Port Townsend Arts Commission, the Human Family Unity Foundation, the Jubilation Foundation, a project of the Tides Foundation, and the generosity of all participants. It’s an opportunity for the long-standing Olympic Peninsula community of Deardorff to come together (albeit online) with mythos enthusiasts from around the world.
